Happy Ground Hogs Day in the USA!
0202-groundhog-day-top-five-animal-forecasters-600_full_380

Punxsutawney Phil isn't the world's only prognosticator. Before Groundhog Day, Celts looked to the badger, Brits looked to their cats, and Europeans turned to the bear to discern the coming weather

In the US, on February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler's Knob - in front of thousands of followers from all over the world. According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. Yesterday, the 2010 prediction was for 6 more weeks of winter!

The celebration of Groundhog Day began with Pennsylvania's earliest settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states, "For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl in May..." Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler's Knob was made on February 2, 1887.

This reminds me how connected we are to nature and how often human beings look outside of ourselves for the answers. To survive as a species we had to pay attention to all that happened around us and learn to predict what is coming next. On one level awareness is a skill and yet allowing what others say to replace our own ability to decide is a trap. It is great to be connected to nature and our past, though also very important to view ourselves as the authority in our lives.

In wellness coaching we encourage others to be aware of all that goes on around them and at the same time to take full responsiblity for their lives. Though many things happen that are out of our control it is important for a person to be empowered to learn and decide what they can. Who is responsible? Who decides? Who is in control? These are constant questions that impact a persons way in the world and lifestyle choices.
What we know:
  • Empowered people make better decisions
  • When things happen that are beyond our control believing there is a bigger plan is useful
  • Nature is a healing teacher
